Many Thanks to our Volunteers
On April 21st, over 250 volunteers worked at Hart Park to clean-up the banks of the Menomonee River and other areas of the park. Volunteers also worked on removing invasive species, like Buckthorn and bush honeysuckle. Over 320 native trees and shrubs were also planted along the banks of the Menomonee River.
The day was cool and sunny. Local residents, Marquette University students, and volunteers from Kohl’s Corporation all pitched in to accomplish the tasks.
Twenty different native species were planted, as part of a riverbank restoration project. Tree species included varieties of oaks and maples, but also the lesser known musclewood and ironwood. This project was made possible by a grant from Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust, INC. (http://www.swwtwater.org) for work to restore the banks of the Menomonee River in Hart Park.
Additional plantings of native grasses, forbs and trees will be scheduled for the fall. We are still looking for volunteers to water our plants during the hot summer weather. Please contact us for more information on this project at www.iharrpark.org. |
